Whats with all the crap?

* El Cap Tue Feb 24th, 2009 10:50am

I know people like their stats here, but seriously...what is with the influx of absolute rubbish hitting the queue in the past couple of months or so?

Is someone literally going to youtube and posting their recommended list every day or something? There is just so much awful content in the queue at the moment - to the point where I can't even be bothered to go through and moderate it all - I am sure others agree too, this leaves some good quality stuff in the queue pending at the bottom of a long list of crap!

You just need to go into the queue now to see what I mean?

Can this be dealt with? Can we give people negative points for unapproved content or something? How about we make it harder for people to submit stuff - make them tag, title and source an image for each of their posts rather than just post a link??

This time last year Bordom was absolutely rocking, I could come on daily and end up laughing my ass off going through the items in the queue - now it's a case of me thinking "old", "old", "dupe", "old", "not funny", "another obama article", "another obama article", "old", "old", "not funny" as I go through them.

Sorry for the long rant but I think it's seriously affecting the quality of Bor!

El Cap, thanks for articulating this the way you did. I think you've hit onto something that we've all been thinking. So now we're going to try to come up with ways to combat this.

After some discussion earlier today and weighing some options, I think a solution to this will be to add "weight" to a voter's vote, based on their own reputation of having a high approval rate.

Basically this will mean votes from someone who is known to post quality things will mean more than someone who posts less popular things.

The exact formula hasn't been worked out yet, but I think this would help keep the queue less cluttered - getting the good ideas up on the front page, and the bad items removed.

Thanks for taking action, hopefully that will work!

I think a lot of links end up there accidentally also, like in #bor when you post a link without "escaping" it in IRC, it will add it to the queue - maybe this isn't always peoples intention.

I love the way people can interact with bor via all these methods, and especially appreciate the quality of the development that has gone into bor (being a developer myself, <3 the ajax) but I'm starting to think that if an article was really worth posting - people would login to their account and submit it the long way round (via bordom.net) rather than just pasting the links into IRC, etc...maybe I'm wrong, but that's just my thoughts.

It is definitely true that irc -> bordom often leads to less "prepped" items. I'm very guilty of that myself. With that said, it is sometimes nice to give other people the freedom to "dress up" a post. It can really be an art form and I really like to see what photos people come up with.

Another thought to consider is that, to some extent, if an item gets posted to the queue and ultimately gets rejected, that this is Bordom working the way it is supposed to work. I agree however that it can be demoralizing to down-vote a lot of stuff (especially if it just sits in the queue *forever*). Without a doubt, though, items should get out of the queue much faster-- either up to the front page or eaten by expiry monster-- than they do right now. A week is simply too long.

The thing now is, if you scroll down about 6-7 pages worth - there is some really good stuff that has been posted, that should be approved but usually people have given up by then on moderating, so it hasn't!!

Completely agreed. This points to the need for a faster queue.

Update:

Joeyo and I have made a small, but hopefully important tweak to the way items are bounced out of the queue. The "threshold" for determining what the majority thinks of an item is now factored dynamically, based on the current activity level in the queue.

Let's see if this helps over the next few weeks.

I hit "+" on everything. If someone has taken the time to submit something, well then bygollie i will hit "+"

If you were logged in, the place to post a response would be here.
