yall know Shakespear isnt american right? he was European @.@....and is actually pretty much the reason why author's and Artists and Directors of movies and all kinds of other forms of art are even more widely expressed. If it wasnt for Shakespear taking the world at the time by storm, our world would be 5-600 years behind cultural wise.

Yes, Crackajack. I would hope most people irrespective of their educational background should know that Shakespeare wasn't American, hence the extreme sarcasm and mockery leveled at Eblanc. Eblanc was also attempting to say that Shakespeare wouldn't be taught in 'foreign schools' because of 'different languages' -- as if Shakespeare hasn't been translated to just about every imaginable language.

As far as the other Authors Eblanc mentioned: We did have to read poetry by Pablo Neruda. And although I'm not familiar with the other two Authors, I highly doubt one would argue that either of them were as influential to the literary world as Shakespeare.

I've been taught Shakespeare, and my language is not even remotely close to the Germanic ones. He started theater as it is now, wrote some important stuff, contributed to the English language and was a cool guy generally.

Ever tried translating a song between languages? Especially Spanish to English and vice versa? it kills the feel.

Shakespeare's writings are actually in Elizabethan English, or 'Early Modern English' and can be very challenging to a native English speaker who has yet to come across it. Most often it is taught with the Elizabethan English on the left page and an English translation with notes on the right. But, I remember there were students in my class for whom English was a second language and they still got through it. Further, it is my understanding that English is often taught in foreign nations in addition to their native tongue -- so, its very surprising to me that you wouldn't have at least had some Shakespeare in High School.

Also, while I agree with you that translations "can take away the 'mood' of anything," Shakespeare has been being translated for so many years that the different version have been translated and revised very meticulously. In fact, there are even translations in many shades of Spanish, including Castilian, Argentinian and Mexican Spanish. So if any translation is going to capture the 'mood' of a piece, its going to be Shakespeare.

Eblanc there were numerous plays that Shakespear wrote that were in a Multitude of Languages. Shakespear was a Poliglot. german, Russian, French, English, Spanish you name it he spoke most Popular European Languages as to reach a larger Crowd to show his Passion and Love for the Arts. Many Poems were written in different Languages aswell. mabe you need to go Back a Few grades and Re-Learn your Art History
